I agree this is a pure pain :(. IIRC there is some stuff in the
contrib dir of transcodes sources, that deals with subtitles.

OTOH mplayer has some -dumpXXX options to handle subtitle streams.

I am sorry, can't give any other advice. My own, limited experiances
with subtitles are a couple of years old. Just didn't want to leave
a restared thread unanswered again ;).
