Hi there :)

I am trying to deal with what can be tactfully described as the vagaries of the OpenOffice.org Help files (but I have plenty of non- tactful descriptions...).

Firstly, these files repeat the same strings over and over, even within a single file. I would strongly recommend merging the Help files with the glossary file.

Secondly, it's all HTML, extremely messy strings which have defeated the other members of my team. I'm used to HTML, but I find this material very wearing. (I have submitted a feature request about hiding code or syntax colouring.)

Thirdly, apparently this is all our fault! I complained about the repeated strings and HTML code strings with no translatable content, and the most recent response was:

clytie,
This is not a problem of the format but the problem of the tool you use. There are tools which can be programmed to parse this format and handle tags correctly (as non-translatable placeables). These tools can also ignore the changes in markup, therefore you will have much less work during updates. Sometimes only the name of icon changes, sometimes inch is converted to cm in dimensions or vice versa. You are not obliged to use free po editors. I think there are better solutions which are not free but I value my time more than a few hundred Euros.

On behalf of both Pootle and LFE (my favourite editors), I answered that my "free PO editors" effectively handled translation files from all my other (20) free-software projects. But I agree that we need to be able to handle HTML, in particular, but XML/Docbook and SGML as well.

What can Pootle and LFE do to handle these formats, preferably hiding the code? In the case of OpenOffice.org, there are nearly half a million words of this HTML-encoded, repetitive Help. I had people willing to translate Help, who have given up because they just can't handle these messy strings. We translators need Help with Help.
