There are also official Subversion Python bindings - 
http://subversion.tigris.org/project_tasks.html says they aren't quite 
complete - but I know of other projects that seem to use them 
successfully to do fairly complex tasks (svnmerge.py - Friedel I think 
you should check this out for handling backporting, we're using it and 
it's good!)
They seem to be more low-level and less object-oriented than PySVN 
(though I haven't really checked either out in detail) - I wonder if 
something like PySVN could more helpfully be written by using the 
Subversion Python bindings and creating an object-oriented layer above them.
