For reference, the documentation about how to proxy through apache is

What exactly does not work at the moment? Does the pages appear at all
(perhaps without images) or does nothing appear? Are you able to access
Pootle directly on the machine with (for example)
lynx http://localhost:8080/
?

We might need to see the relevant part in your proxy.conf just to be
sure.  If it is only the images that are not showing, you probably need
to change the line in proxy.conf which says something like
    DocumentRoot "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/Pootle/html/
but if you are working with a symbolic link in /var/www/ and would like
to keep it that way, you can remove the link and make it point to the
new html directory. I believe it is /usr/share/pootle/html/, but you can
just search for the file pootle.css to confirm.
