Hola lists, Last week we rolled out the first alpha release of the upcoming (and very exciting) Pootle 2.2 and asked for your feedback on the new visual design (thanks to Igor) and the new interactive translation editor (thanks to Julen).
To help you help us this release we created a testing server http://test.locamotion.org , please go there and play around a bit. the data is disposable so don't worry about making mistakes. It's a copy of the main pootle server http://pootle.locamotion.org so if you already have an account there you'll be able to use to login on the test server. While building the test server we found and fixed a couple of bugs, if you want to test locally get the updated alpha package from http://translate.sourceforge.net/snapshots/Pootle-2.2.0-alpha1a/ And for those he missed the original announcement of last week I'm pasting it below. Enjoy, Alaa ---- Only few days after Pootle 2.1 was released We've been working in the dark on our most exciting release yet. and now it is time to give you all a taste. Pootle 2.2 is a radical release, it features a rich interactive (AJAX) translate page written by Julen (big applause). and a daring new visual design by Igor Afanasyev (more applause). Get the alpha from http://translate.sourceforge.net/snapshots/Pootle-2.2.0-alpha1a/Pootle-2.2.0-alpha1a.tar.bz2 Not only does it look and feel fresh the new translate page brings fresh ideas too, instead of stepping through strings you can now filter strings based on their translation state, quality checks, suggestions or search their content. the filtering is interactive and flexible, only matching units are displayed (but we cleverly continue to display the current unit in it's original context). It's a big departure from all previous versions, and Pootle now requires javascript for it's operation. to encourage the more conservative among you we've also added **DRUMROLL** interactive translation memory support **END DRUMROLL** Yes folks that's real honest to god full fledged translation memory coming your way. for now it is actually just a prototype for a remote translation memory server that we'll be launching soon called amaGama but don't tell anyone. (data on the server is not complete, so don't expect good coverage, we are afterall just giving you a glimpse). Hopefully by the 2nd alpha you'll get translation memory results from your Pootle database itself, this way Pootle will learn from your translations and help you reuse them. Now big changes like these require lots of testing, we need to make sure the new design works fine under most browsers, languages, screen sizes, operating systems and phases of the moon. we also want to hear lots of feedback about the direction we're taking the new interface. head here for a list of common tasks to test http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/developers/pootle/common_tasks This is still early in the development process so if you want to see something changed now is a good time to bring it up. Despite the alpha label and the newness of it all this is actually a very stable release since we did not change anything about the data model or the back end server stuff. only the UI changed so there is minimal risk of dataloss. however DO NOT USE THIS VERSION FOR PRODUCTION WORK, you can play with it, you can even run it live on the web as long as your users understand it is for testing only. Pootle 2.2-alpha1 has the same dependencies as Pootle 2.1 but is best tested with the latest version of Translate Toolkit (1.8.1) and the latest version of Django (1.2.3). Do not install this alpha using setup.py, just run from checkout as explained in http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/installation#running_from_checkout_or_archive Remember to report bugs @ http://bugs.locamotion.org/ and to send love to Julen and Igor here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What happens now with your Lotus Notes apps - do you make another costly upgrade, or settle for being marooned without product support?
