I assume your doing this on Ubuntu.  The docs for virtualenvwrapper are
here http://virtualenvwrapper.readthedocs.org/en/latest/

You might need to start a new shell as I think the wrappers are actually a
number of command aliases.

I'm afraid beyond that the best place to find instructions on
virtualenvwrapper is from your distro and from virtualenvwrapper docs.

mkvirtualenv wraps virtualenv and simply makes virtaulenv's easier to
manage and use.

e.g. doing:
workon pootle

would active the pootle env from anywhere in the code.  Which is neater
then having to issue:

. <env-name>/bin/activate
