Subject: OpenOffice.org: Misunderstandings
Dear Ryan,
I'm the Community Manager of OpenOffice.org and am writing on
behalf of the OpenOffice.org Community Council to correct some
misstatements you made in a recent article on the Fedora Foundation
[0].
Briefly, there is an egregious misunderstanding. The OpenOffice.org
community of developers, contributors and users is by no means
interested in asking Sun to withdraw its vital support from the
project. There was no request in February for Sun to donate
OpenOffice.org code to an independent foundation, though there has
been healthy debate on the subject. The source of the
misunderstanding can be laid at my footsteps: I gave an interview
and the interviewer took some liberties in crafting a sensational
headline that did not reflect my sentiments or those of the
community.[1] As to IBM: IBM's activities are its own business, and
we cannot presume to know why it forked. We are pleased it is
supporting the OASIS OpenDocument Format, which we also support,
and that it is a leader, along with Sun and others, in promoting
the ODF's adoption. For what it is worth, we have repeatedly
invited IBM to contribute its code to OpenOffice.org; to date it
has not, unlike Google, Intel, Novell, Propylon, Red Hat, Debian,
and many other companies and projects. All these other companies,
some of them quite vigourous competitors of Sun, contribute code
and even resources to the project. We hope that IBM will one day
contribute in any way it can back to the community.
We would appreciate it if you would publish this clarification.
ArsTechnica is widely read and respected, and we would hate to see
this sad misinformation spread further.
Thanks,
Louis Suarez-Potts
