     Looks like a PBX feed.  Transformers are still used, but not as often. 
     For the most part, newer designs do without transformers. Makes things 
     cheaper and smaller. After line protection, Tip and Ring can go 
     directly to a Subscriber Line Interface Circuit, such as what Analog 
     Devices makes.
     
     Transformers, if used can be wet or dry.  How much room do you have? 
     If you go dry, the current source must be rugged.(Has to meet 
     lightning and power cross requirements).
     
     Bellcore has a lot of standards.  TR-NWT-000057 would be a good one to 
     start with..

Does anyone know what the front end of the Central Office loop start
line card look like. Do they still use transformers?  If so; is it dry
or wet?
Which CODECS are used?  Are they available commercially?
