Regarding the EN60950 second edition. You are correct to assume that it encompasses EN41003. You do not necessarily need the latter. however, out of habit some people still test to both. This is probably because there exists some application notes at BABT (AN48 for example) whic refer to EN41003 and NOT EN60950.
There are no spectral noise tests in the safety standards. BABT are probably refering to out of band and in band noise tests from the relevant network connection functional spec. They are probably worried that a new power supply will change things. Let them Worry ! Safety should not be there concern any more. It is impractical to expect a supplier to retest a product every time they change a PSU. Take the case of a plug top PSU. Or a PC Card which can be powered from any of hundreds of different PSU's ! Do they really want to test with all of them ? As I said in my previous email. Tell them where to get off. Best regards Barry Singleton Approvals Specialist ------------- Original Text From: [email protected] (Roger Prenger), on 11/10/96 11:33: Treggers, I am considering changing the power supply on a telecom terminal we market to the UK. I ask BABT what was required of us to maintain our current approval for the terminal except with a new power supply. They replied that we must fill out a "BABT 701 safety form and, if appropriate, they (we) must commission type tests in respect of switch mode spectral noise output at a UK test laboratory to verify that the new psu complies with the PSTN network access requirements." I intend to call BABT to clarify that statement, but since the day has come and gone in UK, I thought perhaps someone on the network here could give me some information I can use before the week ends. 1) The BABT 701 specifies the basis of safety evaluation should be to EN 60950 PLUS EN 41003. Is EN 41003 not included in EN 60950 or is EN 41003 a seperate entity? I thought I heard at one point the EN 41003 was represented in Clause 6 of the EN 60950. 2) What tests are required for testing the "...switch mode spectral noise..." and is this covered in either the 60950 or the 41003? 3) Anyone want to expound upon a method to determine if indeed the test falls into the "...if appropriate, ..." category?
