Mr. Ralph E. John, P.E. and Mr. Eric George from Ergonomics Inc.
will make a technical presentation on ABC's of switching power
supplies with power factor correction and a demonstration
on measuring equipment's harmonics on 27-Mar-96. Bill Holz,

Robert E. Moro, Senior Compliance Officer, Consumer Product Safety Commission 
has accepted the NPSS invitation to make the technical presentation at the 
24-Apr-96 NPSS dinner meeting. The topic is CPSC concerns on ITE products.
This special dinner function will be held at the Radisson Inn Marlborough 
at I495 and Route 20W. This function is free to paid NPSS members and 
$10 for non-members. If you haven't paid your dues in 1996, please do so
to avoid any embarrassment at the door. See CPSC outline included below.

Mark Swank of TUV Essen, Jill Geppert of TUV Product Service and 
Dave Lohbeck of TUV Rhineland all have tentatively agreed to make technical 
presentations at the 22-May-96 NPSS meeting. Topics and abstracts 
to be announced soon. See TUV Product Service outline included below.

Mike Jamison, the compliance manager at Raychem Corporation in CA is
making a technical presentation on PTC's and Dr. Alvin S. Weinstein
is making a presentation on system safety, risk assessment, hazard index
and creating defensible products at our 26-Jun-96 NPSS meeting.

The annual NPSS family barbecue is scheduled for the third Saturday in August
on 17-Aug-96. Plenty of beer and burgers plus the following activities:
swimming, boating, fishing, horseshoes, volleyball for the young in heart. 
This special social function will be held at 36 Ridge Road in Foxboro, MA.
The hosts are John and Cathy Freudenberg (508-543-6599). This function is free 
to paid NPSS members and $20 per family for non-members. If you haven't paid 
your 
dues in 1996, please do so to avoid any embarrassment at the door.

Mirko Matejic, newly elected president of the IEEE-EMC Society has
confirmed a joint NPSS & IEEE-EMC meeting at EMC Corporation on 25-SEP-96.

Unless noted otherwise, NPSS meets on the 4th Wed of every month after working 
hours starting at 7 pm at EMC Corporation in Hopkinton off RT495, exit 21B. 
Bear right at the bottom of the ramp and turn left onto South Street at the 
traffic light. The meetings are held in the EMC Corporate Auditorium at 
EMC's 42 South Street Training Facility. 42 South street is the first right 
after turning onto South Street, just up the road on the right is O'Tooles Pub
North Pond House. The hosts from EMC Corp are Cliff Stark and Dave Lorusso.
Many NPSS members start getting together after 5:00pm at O'Tooles Pub North
Pond House for dinner.

Northeast Product Safety Society Meeting at EMC Corp.

Mr. Robert E. Moro accepted our invitation to make a presentation at the NPSS
dinner meeting on 4/26/96, at 6:00PM. Mr. Moro is a Senior Compliance Officer 
of the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission operating out of the 
Eastern Regional Center at 6 World Trade Center, 3rd Floor, Room 350 
in New York, NY 10048-0950. His presentation will cover the following:

1) Overview of CPSC, its structure, statutes and responsibilities.

2) Field office responsibilities of inspections, investigations and
   case development.

3) Review of the Consumer Product Safety Act, its applicable
   regulations, and industries reporting responsibilities under Sections 15 and 
37.

4) Examples of problem areas with computer related products, electrical
   products, and recall programs involving these types of products.

The 24-Apr-96 NPSS dinner meeting will be held at the Radisson Inn Marlborough 
(phone # 508-480-0015) is conveniently located just off Interstate 495 and 
Route 20 West, 35 miles from Logan International Airport (Boston).
If your coming from Logan or off Interstate 95 , take Interstate 90 (Mass Pike)
to Interstate 495 North. Exit 24B is a few exits north of the Mass Pike 
entrance.
Route 20 West is exit 24B off Interstate 495 and the take the first right hand 
turn
 just 100 yards after entering Route 20 West on to Felton St. The hotel is half

Dr. Alvin S. Weinstein is both an engineer and an attorney, and has been
working in the field of product safety for over thirty years.  He is
Professor Emeritus at Carnegie Mellon University (Mechancial Engineering)
and has taught at the Franklin Pierce Law Center.  Among his publications is
the book "Creating the Reasonably Safe Product".  He is the president of
Weinstein Associates, a firm dedicated to helping manufacturers assess and
increase the safety of their products, address products liability issues,
and comply with European Directives.

Topics will include: Procedures for System Design Safety; the Product Safety
Audit (including leading attendees though the process with an actual
consumer product as an example); Documentation for the Reasonably Safe
Product; Calculating the Hazard Index; and a comparision of complying with
European standards and creating a defensible legal (products) position
domestically.

Introduction - The Northeast Product Safety Society, Inc. (NPSS)
was founded in the late 1980's to promote close cooperation and
the exchange of technical information among its members.
NPSS, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization, incorporated under
the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Objectives - NPSS`s objectives are scientific, technical and
educational in character. The Society strives for the advancement of
theory & practice of product safety and of allied arts & sciences and 
the maintenance of a high professional standing among its members.

Field of Interest - The field of interest of the NPSS is product safety
and related issues. This especially includes electric shock, fire, mechanical 
and energy hazards as applicable in design, manufacturing and end use of 
products. Emphasis shall be placed upon design requirements & guidelines,
evaluation & test procedures, and standardization of these practices.
