Dear Treggers,

Can anyone answer the following points regarding the physical connection a
data modem to the British telephone network.

I am referring to a data modem that is supposed to connect to a telephone
line and to an additional telephone set, without requiring the user to
install any additional wall sockets. Also, since the data modem is in the
form of a board for installing in a PC, I am keen to avoid using the
British Telecom connectors, since this will make the board tooling
substantially different from that needed for other markets (clearly
component assembly will differ for the various markets).

For most countries where USOC (RJ11-type) modular connectors are not used,
adaptor cables or plugs are available that allow a data modem or facsimile
machine, equipped with a US modular socket, to be connected to the local
wall socket, while providing a socket of the local variety for connecting a
telephone set. These adaptors generally also allow for the data modem or
facsimile machine to connect or disconnect the telephone set. However, I
have not come across an adaptor or adaptor cable of this kind for the
British market, and wonder if such a device exists. Can anyone tell me
where I can find such a thing?

I know that there is no regulatory reason for using one type of connection
or another. However, in order to market successfully in a given region, one
should avoid doing bizarre things. Can anyone tell me whether the
connection of a data modem board, equipped with a US modular socket is
acceptable in Britain, or whether all such boards are sold with integral
British Telecom sockets?

Incidentally, I am aware that the tip and ring connections need to be made
to the outer pair of whichever socket is being used, as dictated by the
wiring of the British sockets.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Best regards,
