What units for s and d?

Thanks Michael, 

It looks obvious that since d and s are in a ratio with 
each other, their magnitudes don't matter as long as 
their units are the same (ft/ft, inches/inches), but which 
standard are the units based - inches, mils, millimeters...? 

I assume since it's dealing with wire it's mils?
