DPNSS was developed in the 1980s by British Telecom and UK PBX manufacturers. It stands for Digital Private Network Signalling System. It was developed before ISDN was fully defined and before the basic QSIG definition was available. Its facilities were deployed by British private network operators who wanted to make use of digital networks as soon as possible and hoped theirs would become the defacto standard. DPNSS is rich in supplementary services and its information flows have been used as the basis for work on the QSIG protocols. Interworking between QSIG and DPNSS was one of the design objectives. Since QSIG has taken over as the international private network signaling system of choice, as defined in IEC/ISO/JTC1 standards, I have not kept track of how well they did on the interoperability objective. DPNSS is defined in three British Telecom documents that were available to any manufacturer: BTNR 188: Digital Private Network Signalling System No. 1 BTNR 188-T: Testing Schedule BTNR 189: Interworking between DPNSS1 and other Signalling Systems No, I don't know of any text books. Another one of these things were you had to be there and read the various submissions that went into the standard. Ciao, Vic
