Scott,

Only just read my TREG mail! A Smart Switch (or Box) is a small
(maybe 18" x 12") box that hangs on the wall in your equipment room.
It takes in calls from your phone system which is (normally)
connected to the BT local network. It then decides via lookup tables
whether they should be routed out onto the Mercury network or passed
straight through to the BT network. Obviously this is a cost based
decision. People like COLT (City Of London Telecomms) also have Smart
Switches which work the same way giving least cost routing. Let me
know if you need any further information.
