Hello from San Diego:
Eric Lifsey raises some administrative points I would like
to clarify.
1. Messages TO the emc-pstc listserver should be addressed:
[email protected]
An alias, which may not always be reliable, is:
[email protected]
2. Messages sent FROM the emc-pstc listserver are always
addressed as being from:
[email protected]
(This is also the SENDER listed in the message header.)
I believe this address will also work as a TO address. It
is the address which is used when you "reply" to the message
(depending on how your mailer is set up).
3. Depending on how your mail system is set up, your REPLY
command will either:
a) send a message to the originator (not the IEEE), or
b) send a message to the (IEEE) listserver.
You should check the headers on any reply to be sure the
message is going where you intend it to go.
4. If you use a "REPLY TO ALL" commmand, then a message will
be sent to the originator AND to the listserver. This will
result in two messages being received by the originator,
one directly from you, and the other from the IEEE listserver.
(I believe this is what triggered the complaint from Eric.)
If you use a "REPLY TO ALL" command and ALSO enter the IEEE
listserver address, then two copies of the message will be
sent to everyone on the list. Check your headers before you
send your message to be sure it is going where you intended.
5. To unsubscribe from emc-pstc, send an email message to:
[email protected]
(Please don't send your request to the entire mail list!)
Send the following text in the body (not the subject line)
of the email message:
unsubscribe emc-pstc
This will unsubscribe the e-mail address from which you send
the message. If you are subscribed with some other address,
you'll have to send a command of the following form instead:
unsubscribe emc-pstc other-address@your_site.your_net
If you don't know what address you are subscribed with, you
can send the following command to see who else is on the list:
who emc-pstc
(The list is over 700 lines long. You'll need an editor with
a word-search capability to find anything in the list!)
For an example of these message header listings, see the attached
header copy.
On another subject, if you have complaints about message content,
please contact me or Roger Volgstadt rather than issue a complaint
to the entire mail list. Roger and I will handle these off-line
and in private. Our subscribers are interested in the technical
subject matter, and don't "spam" or otherwise deliberately send
misleading or otherwise erroneous messages. We try to treat all
of our subscribers as meaning well in all postings. Yes, there are
occasional lapses, and we treat them as such with friendly reminder
messages. Only once have I had to remove a subscriber for abusing
the priviledge of subscribing to this list. (We have over 700
subscribers from around the world! Its the largest of the IEEE
listserver lists.)
Some reminders of what NOT to send:
Overt advertisements. If you can offer a service in response
to a particular question, then this is acceptable as long as
it is no more than a mention of your service and how to contact
you. Thus far, our subscribers have been very good at this; my
compliments to you for your discretion. Any "advertisement"
not in response to a request appearing in a posted message will
result in immediate removal from our subscription list.
Virus messages. Please don't send these. Our membership
will not deliberately send a message with a virus, so there
is no need to warn the membership. It is possible that a
member may inadvertantly send a message containing a virus to
the list, in which case we would expect him to warn us of the
specific message. I think this may have happened once since
the inception of the list. So, on the whole, our subscribers
are responsible and competent with respect to viruses. (You
should have other, more reliable means of being warned of or
detecting for viruses.)
"Good deed" and similar "off-subject" messages. Please don't
send these. This listserver is for dealing with safety and
EMC issues. Diluting the technical messages with off-topic
messages reduces the usefulness of this group. There are
other avenues for such messages.
I want to compliment ALL of our subscribers, including the lurkers,
on their outstanding participation in this listserver. The sharing
of information in the fields of safety and EMC has benefitted every
one of us. And we have done so without "flaming" the other guy --
even when we disagree with him. OUTSTANDING! Congatulations to
you! And keep up the contributions, no matter how small or
controversial.
