Bill,

At my company we build field serviceable products and as a result the
customer comes in contact with many of the internal workings. Mechanical
drawings are used on occasion. Also our some of our remote service offices
are in the EU and they like the idea of metric hardware, just for the ease
of replacing fasteners that are lost.

I have no idea how they will deal with things like the 19" equipment rack
standards. Could they impose a 48.26 cm standard rack?

There is one other problem. Currently we have a conflict with US standards
requiring a dual marking for things like weight on shipping cartons or
papers. I think there is a D.O.T. requirement like this. I still do not
know how to deal with this.

I hope your not telling me that the "EU" can reach into the our
company and force us to change our design processes in areas that they
will never see or affect the use of the product. Why should we
release engineering drawing which are intended for our suppliers of
say a front panel with only metric values? The vender may be in US
and works in the inches and feet. Why would the "EU" care. I can
understand this directive applying to the user's manual or maintenance
     manual.

Jim,

My understanding of this directive is that anything associated with the
product, be it labels, specs, manuals, sales brochures, packages, etc., must

use the SI system exclusively. This means anything published or in print,
no exceptions. I hope this does not also restrict verbal communication.

At my company we currently have a dual system of SI and the "old" English
system in operating specs in the user manuals. We intend to continue at
least through 1998 this way and hope to have a plan in place to have
everthing SI'ed by the end of 1998.

Does anyone have the details of the impact of this Directive? How many of
the following "packaging" type items are within its scope:

 - product labels
 - boxes
 - owner's manuals
 - service manuals
 - brochures
 - advertising

Also does anyone know if there is any middle ground? Perhaps the clutter
of interspersing metric and imperial (for lack of a better term) units is
the problem, in which case physical segregation would be a possible
 solution.

Thanks for your help.
