Doug, I was part of the formulating group that wrote the T1 Interface standard and chair of the Committee that wrote the PBX standard when the T1 interface was added to that standard.
In all that work, I don't remember this ever coming up, I guess, because we were writing Interface Standards, not Product Standards in North America. I may be wrong, but I don't think there is a standard that describes these alternatives. I am copying Bill Buckley on here, as he was chair of more things than he remembers AND is one of the most astute technical people in this regard. Maybe he can set me straight (on this issue only).
