Eric, Class 1E is a classification used for equipment in Nuclear plants which is critical to safety. It is defined in IEEE 384-1992 as: "The safety classification of the electric equipment and systems that are essential to emergency reactor shutdown, containment isolation, reactor core cooling and containment, and reactor heat removal, or are otherwise essential in preventing a significant release of radioactive material to the environment."
i.e. : pretty serious safety stuff with fairly onerous requirements - there's a whole swag of IEEE standards concerned with Class 1E equipment.
