Being "scared half to death" is an uncommon event, else the world would be 
filled with the half-alive. Being "scared half to death" a second time would 
indicate a unique propensity for attracting this phenomenon. Hence, you might 
reasonably expect being "scared half to death" to happen to you with ever 
greater frequency.

Now, each occurrence becomes an event in a series, and, assuming you start at a 
full-life value of 1, you can see that, although the value of your life 
asymptotically approaches zero (the doornail state), you will never actually 
achieve total death.
