Scott,

The Directives, EMC and Low Voltage, specify that products must operate as
intended in their end-use environments, not cause undue interference, and be
safe when used as intended in the manner FOR which they were intended. It
is, therefore, perfectly acceptable for you to state with all other
disclaimers that your products are specified for use in a commercial
environment, and not a household environment, and that there may be some
slight disturbance to apparatus as mentioned in the standards. If you like,
get a Competent Body to buy into it. Most of them will.

This is more of a risk issue than a technical issue. My suggestion is to
manage it from a regulatory perspective as opposed to a standards
perspective (i.e. focus on what the regulations call for, not what the
standards call for; the two perspectives differ quite dramatically). You'll
get more bang for your compliance buck!

If you have any questions, or would like clarification of what I'm saying
from a statutory perspective, please give me a call or send an e-mail.

|
|We develop and sell a telephone operator position (basically, a modified PC
|platform) and are looking to offer in the EU. The modifications required
to
|convert the PC platform into an operator position cause the once EN 55022
|class B compliant PC to comply only with class A limits.
|
|Per subclause 4.1 of EN 55022, Class B is required for products intended
for
|the "domestic environment". Where the question comes in is in the
additional
|note as part of this subclause, where the domestic environment is defined
as
|an environment where broadcast radio/TV receivers may be expected within "a
|distance of 10 meters of the apparatus". Although these operator positions
|are intended to be deployed in an "office environment", it is possible that
|within the EU, an operator service center could possibly be located within
a
|building adjacent to a dwelling where a TV or radio could be located within
|10 m distance.
|
|How have other manufacturers of commercial-use ITE (office PC's, etc.)
viewed
|their obligation with respect to the definition of a "domestic environment"
|in the EU? Has class A compliance been good enough?
|
