Hi Steve:
SABS requirements for ALL electrical equipment can be found
at:
http://www.sabs.co.za/
Then, click on "Compulsory Safety Scheme."
The pertinent requirements are:
"The onus will in future be on traders, manufacturers or
importers to be able to supply a test report from a
recognized test house that can prove that each and every
item they are selling that is covered by the new
specification complies with its requirements. In other
words, if a retailer is selling vacuum cleaners and washing
machines, the owner must be able to produce documentation
(which could be supplied to him by the manufacturer or
importer, that each of the different makes and models of
washing machine and vacuum cleaner on sale has been tested
by an accepted test house, whether local or overseas, and
that the tests show that it complies with the requirements
of the compulsory specification.
To bring South Africa into line with international standards,
the compulsory safety specifications are identical to those
of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). For
example, electric sauna heating appliances will have to comply
with the requirements of SABS IEC 335-2-53, Safety of household
and similar electrical appliances - Part 2-53: Particular
requirements for electric sauna heating appliances, as published
by Government Notice No. 68 of January 1996. A South African
standard bearing the "SABS IEC" designation, as in this example,
is always identical to the IEC standard bearing the same number.
I read this as saying that providing a CB Report to your
South African importer satisfies the South African
requirements.
Best regards,
Rich
