David,

In my previous life, I brought many a modems through telecom
compliance and Rockwell (now Conexant, I think) had PTT commands to emit
constant carrier and constant DTMF without the need for loop current, etc.
Depending on your chipset, there may be a software utility that simplifies
things quite a bit. I would recommend you contact your local rep to obtain
the doc set as I can't remember the commands.

Good Luck

Subject: Analog modem testing to Part 68

Listmembers,

We are doing in-house continuity compliance testing to Part 68, and one of
our products is a voice-band modem (V.34). Normally these modems will shut
off if they don't detect another modem at the other end. Does anyone have
any way of getting this type of modem to output handshaking and DTMF tones
for signal power measurements without having a second modem connected? It
uses a Rockwell chipset.

Could I use two modems back to back? In that case, could I measure the
voltage and the impedance of the line with a bridge to calculate the power?

Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Regards,

David.
