I'm struggling to understand the way the 650 manages pictures.
I've taken several pictures which were saved to internal memory on the 650.
I also added some pictures, not taken with the Treo, via the Media button on
the Palm Desktop. These pictures seem to show up in various ways in two
folders, the Palm Desktop and the Treo itself:
1. C:\Program Files\palmOne\FergusD\Photos\offline copy location\Internal
2. C:\Documents and Settings\Don\My Documents\My Pictures\palmOne
Photos\FergusD\Internal
3. Palm Desktop under Media
4. The Treo itself.
If I take a picture with the Treo, and then sync, it shows up in 1, 2, 3 and
4.
If I add a picture to the Palm Desktop's Media application, it shows up in
#1, #3 and #4. NOT #2.
If I delete a picture from #1, it disappears from #3 and #4, but it
continues to appear in #2, if it was there in the first place.
If I delete a picture from #4, it disappears from #1 and #3 but stays in #2.
If I delete a picture from #2 and sync, it reappears in #2.
If I rename a picture in #1, 3 or 4, it gets renamed in the other two, but
not in #2.
If I rename a picture in #2 and sync, it has no effect on the other 3
locations.
My conclusion is this:
#1 is kept in sync with the Palm Desktop Media application and the Treo
itself.
#2 is a one-way archive of every picture taken with the Treo, but is
otherwise unrelated to the Treo, Palm Desktop or #1.
The unfortunate effect of this is that if you want to manage your pictures,
you have to manage them in two places since, from what I can tell, the Media
conduit syncs #4 with #1 and the Palm Desktop looks in #1, but it also
copies from #4 to #2 where it creates a separate copy of the picture.
I know there are other, probably better, photo apps out there, but I like to
use stock apps when I can, and now that I understand this better (I think!),
the Media application, the magic undocumented feature (!!) will probably
work fine for me.
Whew! Could it be that the Media application was an afterthought and that's
why it takes this much work on the part of an 8-year Palm user to figure it
out?! Gosh, the calendar syncs. The task list syncs. Memo's sync.
Contact sync. Media requires a PhD to decipher. Hmmmmmmm.
Now, what happens with pictures on the SD card..... aaaaarrrrrggggghhhh!!!
