I'd agree to some extent, but having a beautiful 320x480 picture to me is close
to worthless. Me and my wife actually have a side business in photography and
both use digital SLR's for that type of stuff. But we're not carrying these
around most of the time, and although we also have smaller digicams that are
more portable, it's still nice to be able to have something on your phone that
you will ALWAYS have with you. 640x480 is probably the minimum I would be able
to deal with to portray an image. Call me spoiled, but even with a great
sensor, good exposure control, color accuracy, and sharpness, going lower than
this means tha the picture becomes so small on my hi-res screen that I start to
need a magnifying glass! Lol. MP of course aren't everything, but there are
certain thresholds where they really matter. Aside from this, while you say
most people use these for email and web, well, that may be true, but part of
that is because the cameras aren't good enough to print from yet. Also,
because data rates are still fairly slow, it means that sending larger files
aren't as practical. You get up to a few megapixels and we're talking at least
a meg unless you compress it quite a bit and get some loss of image quality.
The main thing is that all of these limitations are going to be irrelevent in
the not too distant future when data rates, storage capacity, and sensor
technology progress....
