I believe that there are SD cards available that you can use to add WI-FI to
your Treo (650s at least) Most carriers are building Hi-speed mobile access
that will be more widely available than Wi-Fi. The Samsung i730 on Verizon has
BroadBand Access capabilty and I would assume that the next gen Treo will also
have this feature. For what I use the phone for my 100 kbps data connection is
fine for what I use a mobile device for. I can also use bluetooth to connect to
my local network.

My impression is that we are starting to get into the realm of mobile penis
envy and the result will be big ugly useless phones.

Don't recall where I heard it, but what I meant to say was that Wi-Fi is a
requirement for new/upcoming smartphones. My guess is that this is unique to
T-Mobile because of their huge investment in Wi-Fi Hotspots (largest network
  in the country).

And yes, this certainly wouldn't be the first stupid/ignorant/foolhardy
decision a cellular provider has made. ;-)
