I had a similar problem under XP Pro last year. I can't recall the details but it was an app conflict. I solved it with a registry fix I found on a Treo discussion board after googling "XP palm sync error" or something similar. It turned out to be an obscure but known conflict with (as usual) a fix from the user community -- GIYF*.
