The key is not which jukebox/library tool (musicmatch, itunes, real, WMP,
etc.) you use but rather which MP3 encoder you use. Although I haven't
looked at this in depth for over a year, last I checked the LAME encoder was
generally accepted as the best available (although in some ways this is like
trying to say which car is the best available, or which house), and while
iTunes does not use this encoder "out of the box", it can be added somehow.
This is probably explained at the Apple web site. Last I knew, also, this
only applied to the Mac version of iTunes, and so Windows iTunes users were
stuck with the less capable MP3 encoder that comes built in to iTunes (some
variation of the Fraunhofer compression algorithm). I would not expect
iTunes to be any better in producing quality unrestricted MP3s than any
other music library tool out there, even though it is arguably one of the
slickest from a UI point of view.

Anybody care to update the encoder situation? Since the Treo is a music
player, it's sort of relevant!

I use CDEX (free, and yes, it uses the LAME encoder) to rip CDs, and have
for years. It's not as fast as those used by the big jukebox tools, but the
quality is much better, if the word "quality" can be used to refer to any
lossy encoding scheme.. Bottom line for me is that I've so far resisted
having any music in a format that somebody else controls through some wacky
licensing and control scheme. It really makes me mad to have someone else
controlling what I can do with music that I BOUGHT. This position goes
back, I suppose to when I made cassette recordings of all my albums. Yes,
I'm old. Nobody controlled those copies, and I don't want anyone
controlling copies I make now, either. The last thing I have time for is
managing licenses for songs and worrying about what happens when I make my
annual purchase of a new laptop and a new Palm device and move everything to
the new devices. I can barely manage licenses for the software I install,
let alone thousands of songs.

And on the last point, I don't know if it's better, but in my experience
it's certainly faster and easier to move music to the card directly rather
than through the rather clunky Palm install tool!!

Cheers,

Don

iTunes can also import songs as MP3 (128, 160, 192 kbps). Just go to
Advanced>Importing>Import using MP3 encoder.

I'm betting on iTunes to solve the problem ;)

Also, isn't it better to use a memory card reader to copy songs
directly to it?
