Every so often I'll set a reminder and not notice or think about the time it may go off. I put my phone on mute in its cradle with its carrying case over the screen at bedtime and was woke at 1am this morning by a glow on a wall. It turned out to be a reminder set accidentally for specific hours prior to the event. I get a blinking * in the top left corner. I'm not sure how long it was lit up but knew what it was when I woke.
