An update.
I went to the one of the local Verizon wireless stores (a real store, not a kiosk) and explained what had happened. The tech rep went and spoke briefly to the manager of the store and returned with a brand new 700p box. She said that they thought I'd had had enough difficulty with refurbished units that they wanted to give me a new one. THAT'S how to ensure customer loyalty. I pay Verizon approx $300/month by the time all is said and done, and today they just banked a lot of customer satisfaction points with me. The new unit seems to work fine. It took Hotsync about 2 minutes to restore my stuff, and then it took Versamail about 4 minutes to restore 800 calendar entries (6 months worth) 1600 contacts and 120 emails. All in all a very satisfactory result to a very annoying problem! I was in the store for a grand total of about 20 minutes, including buying a new wired headset as backup for my Bluetooth one. Yep, no mike, no speakerphone. Works fine with the Bluetooth headset (which I learned, unfortunately, only AFTER doing the obligatory hard reset). Well, that is as fine as Bluetooth on Treos can work, which is to say passably but not stellar. When I was having reception problems with the second refurb (which problems went away), the tech person at one of the local Verizon stores (they're as numerous as Starbucks around here) said he could replace a 700p with a refurb in the store on the spot. I'm going to take him up on that tomorrow. Let's see how that goes . . . Product quality problems, Palm? Huh? I must say, however, that Mark Moyers' post about the 8525 both made me chuckle and reinforced what I already believe - for general use and especially one-handed use, nothing beats a Treo (even a 750 . . . :-)), product quality problems notwithstanding. Hey, at least this way I'll have had (at least) as many 700p's as I had 650's! There's just no end of fun with electronics, eh? Cheers, Don [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
