I have an unlocked 680, but I presume the only difference is the phone
on/off screen, and maybe the (useless) wallpaper.

TakePhone opens on a display of your choice, not the useless wallpaper.
I have it open on the "Find" page, which is similar to the Contact List
page of the native, except that in TakePhone, it shows me more contacts
at once because it's one per line. Or it could be set to open on a
dial-pad like find.

You can enable or disable as you like the display of indicators for
missed calls, voicemail, SMS and emails, each one separately.

There are five tabs, left to right they are: Redial list, Call Log,
Find, Speed Dial, and Dialpad. You can cycle through them by
repeatedly pressing the phone button, and you can configure which ones
to cycle through and in what order.

You can configure the Find to search in damn near any field, not just
the name or company. You can control the fonts. You can control the
size of the alerts. If you have a third party calendar, web browser,
email client, etc, you can configure TP to use those as helpers instead
of the built-in apps. If you have Google Maps installed, you can tell
TP to get a map of the contact's address. There are several "skins"
available to customize the display somewhat.

If you use calling cards, you can configure their use.

And those are just the highlights.
