May 15 is the day the Music will die!

This is from a broadcaster I am familiar with.

The result is -- unless Congress intervenes -- royalty rates webcasters
must pay will increase on May 15 between 300 and 1,200 percent,
retroactive to January 2006. There are stations that are already
shutting down, and May 15 seems to be the date that many others will
cease broadcasting. The next step will likely be an appeal to the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, but that process
could take at least a year. All that can be done at this point is to
call, write or email your congressional representatives. When my new
rates are revealed from Live365 for Mandozine Radio, I will assess if it
makes sense to attempt to solicit donations or shut down. I really don't
like the idea of listeners paying, even through donations. But, I may
have no choice. It will probally come down to how much listeners want
Mandozine Radio to continue.

Yep...hobbyists and small business owners are the dominant species in
Internet radio. Asking Jim Johnson to move from his hometown of Des
Moines, Iowa just to pursue one of many possibilities for his dot-com
     business is unreasonable.

This will effectively kill small- and medium-sized webcasters if it's
     not repealed. Mark my words.
