My understanding is that CDMA systems cannot reliably use triangulation
to locate the handset, at least not within the accuracy parameters
required by E911 in the US, so CDMA handset manufacturers use some kind
of GPS receiver, probably old technology with newer, smaller, parts,
that can then send your location back to the system. Primary purpose
for this, of course, is so that emergency services can locate you when
you call 911 from your cellphone. Some cellular providers (ie, Verizon
Wireless) have developed new services they can sell you that makes use
of the location data.

OTOH, GSM systems apparently +can+ use triangulation to locate the
handset within a reasonably accurate area, and therefore do not need a
built-in GPS locator for this purpose.

This is probably why the OP thought that the 700p would have a GPS
built-in. When I was with Verizon, my Kyocera 7135 PalmOS smartphone
had one, as does my dad's Motorola cellphone.

As for Telenav requiring a BT GPS receiver, that may not have anything
to do with this at all. Depending on the handset and the service
provider it was purchased through, some phone features may not even be
user-accessible. Forex, Verizon habitually disables things that would
make life simple for their users in order to "force" you to pay them
for the "service" of allowing you access to your own stuff, such as
transferring pictures and ringtones between the handset and your
computer. It may be harder for them to do that with a smartphone than
with a more "normal" phone, but I'm sure they're trying!
