I thought I'd try this service out. It works pretty well at locating.
Accuracy varies, but seems to be within a hundred yards, but sometimes
within just a few yards! It's not a GPS service per se. It will locate
you and others on your plan (or other Sprint users that give you
permission to locate them), but that's it. In other words, you wouldn't
use it to navigate the way you would with TomTom and an actual GPS
receiver. That being said, it's pretty neat and has some interesting
potential applicatios, such has tracking the location of your kids who
have a phone, or tracking your phone if stolen or simply lost. Of
course it won't work if the phone's power goes out. Unfortunately you
have to do the tracking on a computer, or on a phone that you can
download the java app to. Apparently this Java app is not compatible
with the Java runtime that is available for the PalmOS, so no go running
it on the Treo, and you can't access the website interface in Blazer
because I think it uses a java applet. The service is $10/month. Also,
you can have it track your location at specific times of the day and
send you an email alert (or text message). It can then display an
historical series of "breadcrumbs" on the map, indicating your position
over time. Seems like a cool app to play with, but I don't think I want
to give Sprint $10/month for the priveledge, so will probably cancel
before the month is out...

The mystery remains mysterious . . .
Jose's link says: A GPS receiver is incorporated into every Sprint
phone
sold since January 2002.

Sprint Family Locator supports the following phone models:

Child (Locatable) Phones

Treo 700p by Palm
Perhaps the bugaboo is that it only works with Child Phones, and who in
their right mind, would give their kid a 700p ;=)
Besides, I've heard that kids think that Palms are uncool, so no kid
would
carry one. You'd have to have it implanted.
