Dunno if this is what's happening to you, but I couldn't get my treo
to sync on XP until I uninstalled everything, went in and OBLITERATED
all traces of my previous palm including deleting the hardware and
running RegEdit , and then did a clean install. It was finding some
part of my old Sony's stuff.
