Nope. The Verizon Treos (although I don't recall which one you have)
are CDMA only. The Motorola phone you had must have been capable of
doing GSM also (unless London has some CDMA towers?? I've never heard
of that). GSM's a totally different architecture and radio
configuration than CDMA and the two are not interoperable (yet).

I've seen talk of the building of cellular radios that can interoperate
with all kinds of CDMA and all bands of GSM. That may be what's in the
new Blackberry that can do both, or that device (which looks HUGE in the
ads) may just have two separate radios inside.

The cellular carriers don't WANT interoperability, any more than they
want to do away with onerous contracts -- both things lock people in to
one carrier, which they think is good for business. They will be
dragged kicking and screaming (and featuring it like Verizon is) into
interoperability by their customers' needs to make phone calls in an
increasingly small world. It's just the evolution of the business.

Cheers,
Don

Subject: [Treo] Re: International Verizon Treo?

Two years ago before Treo I set up with Verizon two weeks of service
in London for my Motorola flip-phone. Worked just fine. The phone
was CDMA. I could make and receive calls. Pricey, however, and I
did not use it much except to receive calls and call home.

The service used my regular phone number. People who called thought
I was still in Orange County, CA.

I'm hoping my Treo 650 can be configured to do the same thing on an
October trip to Italy. Have not talked to Verizon yet.
