In a situation like that, sending SMS to a group is much easier than making several phone calls. I regularly send SMS to groups.
(BTW, I'm part of the over the hill gang for SMS as I recently passed the 1/2 century mark. So add me to the list of SMS users who were thought to be too old to know how to use SMS.)
