A friend of mine has an iPhone so I got to play with it this weekend.
While it's not worth *all* of the hype I have to give Apple credit:
the device and UI are absolutely gorgeous. Everything is liquid
smooth and works *exactly* as you expect it to. Even our friend,
who's not the brightest bulb in the pack nor a technie, was able to
figure out all of the basics and then some without any help. Sure,
EDGE isn't as fast as EVDO, but the iPhone seems to make better use of
it than my Treo 680 or even my Blackberry 8800. It's still too
limited for me, but my Treo is already worried about iPhone 2.0,
especially if Apple does like Palm did and releases an API that will
let people build non-web applications for it.
Score one for Apple. I hope it kicks Palm in the arse so that they
start innovating again.
