I decided to take a look at some third party SMS clients after the
built-in one on my Treo 680 crashed last night in the middle of testing
how fast the Cingular email-to-sms gateway works.

So far, I've found three that don't work for me for various reasons:

"Premimium SMS" which reset, without asking, my Mail/MSG button that I
have assigned to something else, didn't alert me to an inbound SMS if I
set it to suppress the pop-up, woke the device on the inbound message
with full controls available if NOT set to suppress (meaning visible to
anyone next to me immediately and deletable before I've had a chance to
see it while removing the Treo from its holder). Then when I removed
it, it again reset my Mail/MSG button without asking to the Palm
default which, again, is not what I have it set to.

"PictureSMS" is uglier than its screen shots indicate, there is no way
to turn off the "Picture Caller ID" function, which didn't work right
anyway, and uses its own set of alert tones, none of which I even
remotely like. And it has the same problems as PSMS regarding
alerting/not alerting if suppressing the popup.

And last, and certainly least, "maxTEXT TE" (Treo Edition) doesn't even
work on the 680. Every time I tried to start it, it complained that
the phone subsystem could not be found.

I found these on Handango, and they appeared to be the only ones under
$20 for the Treo, as opposed to a Tungsten for use with BT to a
cellphone.
