I wonder how hard it would be for a third party to make a mini-trackball as a little snap-on to the base of the Treo? The driver could even shoehorn in by translating the movement of the trackball into cleverly-arranged combinations of touchscreen events. That should get us the same result, including variable speed!
Or it could translate (more coarsely) into 5-way keypresses; in that case it should use a shorter and softer "click" sound than the keypress one.
