Years ago, when Minesweeper was a cool game on Windows, I noticed it got
lots more difficult as my scores got higher. I a way, I expected that --
you have to get better at it to get higher scores.
But I noticed that it wasn't my not getting better that was
problematic. I could get to the end and have one mine to fine and a
choice of two places for it to be and I'd always choose the wrong one.
Of coure, there's no way to back up a few moves and take another run at
it, but I learned to be very suspicious the game was making whichever I
chose the wrong choice.
And then, like a dollar slot machine, it would let me have one, just
to keep me playing.
Solitaire also seemed to do that -- reset the scores and I could
almost win blindfolded, but get the scores up and suddenly the game
didn't just get more difficult, it got impossible for 20 or so plays,
then allow a winner, then another dry spell. I could play with real
cards on the kitchen table and have lots better odds, so I knew it
wasn't me just not conforming to the need for increased skill, and I was
pretty certain it wasn't a luck factor.
    Frustrating, ain't it.
Which is why I don't play the slots. Especially after I learned they
actually are programmed that way -- 95 percent of the money that goes in
the front of the machine goes out the back, but that 5 percent is just
enough to keep the suckers playing, each one hoping he'll be the guy to
get the jackpot.
