Through a sequence of Cingular/non-Cingular events best told in
another post, I ended up with a 655 and a 665, between which I could
determine no difference other than how their packaged:
1. The 655 in a Cingular package contains the headset, a AAA battery
charging adapter, a mini-USB charging adapter, a wall-power adapter,
and a vibrating pocket holder.
2. The 655 in an AT&T package contains the headset, a AAA battery
charging adapter, and a vibrating pocket holder.
3. The 665 in a Plantronics package (sold at a Cingular authorized
agent store) contains the headset, an automobile-power charging
adapter, a USB charging cord, and a non-vibrating pocket holder that
puts on an OK light show while charging.
So last night I got on Plantronics Live Support and asked whether the
perpherals might be interchangeable electronically, since clearly they
are physically.
"Micah B" said yes, they are interchangeable.
This morning I had another question. Back I went to Live Support to
ask a tech what's the difference between the 655 and 665, other than
one's black, the other gray; one retails $90, the other $120; one
pocket holder vibrates, the other doesn't; and one is stamped 655, the
other 665. "Graham" responded:
Graham: The accessories that come with the units. I don't know if the
parts are interchangeable. It's not something we've tested. We only
recommend the parts that come with the unit.
John: In other words, I like the 655 because of the vibrating pocket
holder. But is there a difference between the actual headsets, other
than one is stamped 655 and the other stamped 665.
Graham: They work the exact same.
John: What I understand you saying is the 655, at $90 retail, gives me
a vibrating pocket holder and USB charging, and the 665, at $120
retail, gives me the John: same headset, but with a car charger.
Graham: Correct.
John: Amazing
Graham: They work the same and have the same quality.
John: Thank you for the help.
Graham Has Disconnected
So, if anyone's thinking of buying the latest and greatest (and it's
really a pretty great headset), try to find the Cingular-packaged 655.
It's $30 cheaper, comes with more parts, and works exactly the same as
the 665, which has a prettier pocket holder.
