Treo 700p, Verizon. For the past 3 days when I try to send out email
using Versamail I get the error message,

     421 temporary envelope failure (#4.3.0)

Verizon says the problem is that I have my outgoing mail server set to
my ISP's outgoing SMTP mail server instead of Verizon's server and
because of that I am not getting properly authenticated. This seemed
strange to me as it has worked just fine for the past 12 months having
the incoming and outgoing mail server be my ISP's servers.

Anyway, I tried what the Verizon tech support guy said and changed the
outgoing SMTP server to,

     smtp.vzwmail.net

and lo and behold it worked.

I called my ISP and told him about it and he says that in an effort to
fight spam he has made the SMTP server "greylisted" and that is what's
causing the problem with the outgoing mail from the Treo. Indeed, the
date my problems started was the day he greylisted the server.

Can anyone explain to me what greylisted means?

George
