I've done it. Download the latest Desktop and Hotsync, and install them.
I'm not looking at the Palm site right now, but make sure what you're
downloading is for your device. I think I remember sometimes seeing
versions that were device or carrier specific.
The advantage to using the install CD that came with your device is you
don't have to worry about the apps working for you. The down side --
sometimes -- is you won't have any updates that you would have if you
download the latest from Palm.
On the other hand, the last time I installed, it wanted to go online and
get the updates, so that last part probably is not a problem.
You cannot simply copy the .exe files from one drive to the other
because the installer does a number of things that won't accomplish. As
was mentioned, libraries are installed in places you don't necessarily
notice, but even were they all in the same folder, and even if you were
successful in copying all of them from your old drive to the new, the
installer makes entries in your computer's registry that dictate how the
various parts of the program interact with other parts and with other
software. For instance, how Hotsync and the various conduits interact
with Desktop.
The registry is similar to the Preference files in the Treo, etc. -- in
it are your activation keys, color schemes, software customizations --
all sorts of stuff you won't have if you simply copy the executables,
and which, even if you copy the registry/prefs yourself, are likely not
to be 100% compatible with your new hardware.
Like buying a new Treo or TX or ... it's always better to find the
latest versions of all your applications and install them from scratch,
and THEN copy in your data files. That way, you can be pretty sure the
software is going to work the way you expect.
I hope that doesn't muddy things up for you.
