Hi: I tried the Slingbox AV this weekend. It worked great on my friend's satilite system. For my home's basic cable, I would need the Slingbox Tuner ($99) instead of the higher priced units. The AV does not have a built-in tuner and required that the actual device be controlled remotely.
I returned it to MicroCenter and may not get the Tuner either. I like the concept and wanted to try it, but I don't watch a lot of TV. I have a small library of Music, Movies and/or Videos on my PC server. It is more likely that I would want to watch or listen to these file. There is a free service that makes it possible to view them from over the web on a desktop, laptop or mobile device including the Treo (with Kinoma EX 4). The Winamp Remote service is in Beta. One it is installed on the PC with the music and videos and the directories identified, you are all set. You can view them on the Web at http://www.winamp.com/remote On compatible mobile phones On TVs using Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3, and Microsoft Xbox 360 And in the Winamp media player Download Winamp Remote for free and you will also be able introduce your friends to your great music and videos with the 'Friends' feature. I am happy with the results so far. Check the FAQ at http://forums.winamp.com to find answers to the most common questions. NOTE: To use Winamp Remote on Mobile, You must have a Internet data plan on the PC that has the movies and music located on it. You must have a wireless data plan on the end device or, Web browser, and a streaming media player: 3gp, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, or Flash. The Treo needs Kinoma Ex 4 for video playback. The integrated free Kinoma built into the 755p and Centro will do Audio fine, but won't handle video. I set it up on my brother-in-laws' PC and my home's Win 2003 server. He has tons of music and video. I have about 15 DVD movies on mine and a couple of CDs. It work fine. Charges from your wireless carrier may apply for Winamp Remote on Mobile. Not all services are available on all wireless carriers or all wireless devices. Check with your wireless carrier to confirm that product use is consistent with your carrier's Terms of Service. Winamp Remote does not support the streaming of DRM protected music. Enjoy! The Winamp Team Thanks, I'll see you on the web! Carl W.
