I had a Creative Zen (my wife has it now). Its 8Gb plus SD card was
great, spacewise, because I mostly listen to podcasts. But it was
difficult to read at night while driving, and hitting the correct part
of the ring to pause or rewind was not as easy as I wished.
So when the passenger next to me on a flight to Miami took out his
Classic and I could easily read it and he said he'd dropped it a few
times and the HDD still worked, I went looking, found one on the Open
Box table at the local Circuit City, and tried it out. The buttons I
need to hit while driving (i.e. not looking at the device sticking out
of my ash tray) are easily accessible and far enough separated to make
hitting them easy. And 80Gb is more than enough to put on a fairly
eclectic selection of music, a couple of audiobooks, and all the
podcasts I like to listen to.
I expect there's a lesson in there for the Treo designers because if
they could package the functionality of a Treo in an iPhone, they
probably could sell a bunch of them. It's not like price is the problem;
I'll bet there's more than two of us with an expensive Treo and an
expensive iPod simultaneously occupying space in our pockets.
I look at the marketing now and I see specialized business gear
(Blackberry) being sold to business folks, and toys (iPod Touch) being
sold to the younger set. When the latter grows up and wants what the
former have, we'll see some neato combination devices.
