Yeah, I do this, although it's usually just to investigate some fact
that nobody in the conversation knows or can think of at the moment
("what was the name of that movie with Martin Short and Dennis Quaid
in it?") rather than to "prove myself" (which even I would find
irritating to the point of distraction).
