OK found the answer.

1. Install JVM. It runs, but the OS doesn't know what to do with .jad files 
and wants to put them on the card.

2. Reset so the OS can "learn" that the JVM can work with .jad (MIDlet) files.

3. Download the gmail midlet.  IF you don't have a 700p, it will warn you that 
you probably don't have java, but there is a link to download anyway "if you 
are sure you do".  This time you will be asked whether to save it to the card 
or to J9.  Select J9.

4. It then asks you whether to save or launch.  If you choose launch it, it 
won't launch, but takes you to your launcher app.

5. Run the JVM and there it is, ready to install.  Do an install through the 
JVM, and it now appears on a menu of apps in the JVM.  Launch it from there 
or use the launcher icon it installs.
