And that mention might not have even been about PalmOS, but about Palm's WM offerings, right?
Let's face it, most larger corporations and government agencies in the US use exchange, so WM is a natural fit for a mobile extension to that. RIM, though, has been entrenched in that same marketplace for longer than MS has, and there's a huge base of workers who prefer the BB interface over WM. Where does PalmOS fit in? Well, you can get it to do similar things with Versamail, and through products like Good... I can't remember the exact name. And a more limited set of functionality through plain IMAP. Of course some of these require special set up on the server side, and versamail may not be as versatile as activesync or a BES, I'm not sure. In any case, it's a whole lot easier for IT managers to go along with the built in tools, or the very mature tools like a BES. It's less risky for them, and unless there are some PalmOS diehards in high places, this is a much less risky thing then trying to support all platforms. It'll be interesting to see what will happen with Android, and I'm not sure how the iPhone is fiting into corporate environments at this point, but maybe after next week when Apple unveils the 2G version, maybe we'll see even more interest (if only they'd open up to other carriers!).
