After some dinking aroud, I've discovered the original file is an AMR.
At least when I emailed it to myself, that's what arrived.
Of course, I've got several audio format converters and none of them
will start with an AMR and make it anything else.
Googling reveals lots of questions about it. You'd think someone
would have come up with an answer.
