First, let me get some things out of the way. I really like my Centro. I am the Blackberry administrator at work, and I get a free curve, free Verizon account with tethering, In spit of that, I keep my personal Sprint Centro. I have personally given up on Desktop HotSync. I sync contacts and calendar with EAS, and use the mass storage app for copying and moving photos. I use the wonderful NVBackup to run a daily incremental backup at 1 AM. When I forget and try to use VersaMail and it irretrievably crashes the Centro, I have restored from these daily backups without problems.
I have expressed my skepticism about the Pre, but will probably get one next year after the Centro dies and the inevitable Pre bugs shake out. That said... I think Palm OS 5.x has been a disaster, and a large part of Palm's demise. If HotSync had been as stable and reliable as HotSync 4 and before, Palm may have remained the leader in PDAs and PDA phones. When I first agreed to take on the responsibility of learning Blackberry and BES, and becoming the BES administrator, there was a deal that I would no longer have to support Treos. Like many promises at most jobs, it didn't quite work out that way. The executives that switched to BB handed down their Treos to the next tier, and one Exec who abhors change and was still using a 650, got a Centro when the 650 died. So far the failure rate of configuring a reliable HotSync or 700p/EAS has been 100%. Some of the managers that inherited the Treos have demanded Blackberries, and I find myself trying to avoid the others who still have problems. This is a very bad thing because, I like these people, and because I pride myself in solving, not hiding from problems. At this point, solving those problems is limited to convincing them to demand Blackberries. We are a Verizon shop. I don't know how reliable the Pre will be, nor whether I will otherwise want to support them. We'll see, but I am through with Treos/Centros professionally. -- -- artAlexion sent unsigned from webmail interface
